Melbourne train lines in the city's west is set for significant transport improvements with construction beginning this weekend.

Victorian government crews will work around the clock for 14 days starting tomorrow evening to upgrade the Melton Line, build two new stations and remove four level crossings for Melbourne train lines. West Tarneit Station will open later this year on the Geelong Line, featuring two platforms, an accessible underpass, a four-bay bus interchange and a 400-space car park.

Pressure on nearby Tarneit Station – currently the busiest regional station outside Southern Cross – should ease once the new facility opens. Platform extensions at Caroline Springs and Deer Park stations will also be completed during the blitz, allowing longer nine-car VLocity trains to run from 2027. Passenger capacity on peak services will increase by 50 per cent when the extended trains begin operating.

Construction crews will simultaneously complete signalling works for the new Cobblebank stabling yard, designed to house the longer nine-car trains and prepared for future Melton line electrification. Four dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne train lines will be removed as part of the works, with new rail bridges being built at Coburns and Exford roads in Melton, plus new road bridges at Ferris Road in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina.

A modern and accessible Melton Station will replace the current facility when level crossings are removed later this year, improving access to train services while reducing congestion on surrounding roads. Coaches and buses will replace trains on sections of the Geelong and Ballarat lines from 8pm Saturday 10 January until the last service on Friday 23 January.

Passengers should allow extra travel time and check the Transport Victoria website for information on service changes affecting the Warrnambool and Geelong lines, plus the Ararat, Maryborough and Ballarat lines during January.

Works have been coordinated to minimise disruption while delivering major infrastructure improvements to one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing regions.
