Weekend commuters are advised to prepare in advance as multiple train lines will face disruptions this weekend.
Get ready for Uber surge pricing out the wazoo, because train disruptions are taking over Melbourne this weekend. Transport Victoria has warned passengers that the Metro Tunnel will be closing from 11:30pm on Friday 22 May until the last service on Sunday 24 May for maintenance works.
These disruptions may have a significant impact on footy fans. Games on in Melbourne this weekend include the Dreamtime at the G match between Richmond and Essendon tomorrow night, as well as the North Melbourne versus Gold Coast Suns game happening at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon and the Collingwood versus the West Coast Eagles at the MGC on Saturday evening.

This means Cranbourne and Pakenham trains will start and end at South Yarra (so those on their way to the city will need to change to Frankston and Sandringham lines). Buses will replace trains on the Sunbury line between North Melbourne and Sunbury, as well as on the Werribee and Williamstown lines between North Melbourne, Newport, and Williamstown.
The Upfield line will not run from 8:30pm on Friday until the last service on Sunday, with buses replacing trains throughout the weekend. The Frankston line will still be running through the City Loop, heading in an anticlockwise direction from Parliament to Flinders.
Those planning to travel via V Line my also be effected, with coaches replacing trains all weekend on the Ballarat line. Coaches will also cover segments of the Bendigo, Echuca, and Swan Hill lines, as well as other lines during the evening.
Belgrave, Lilydale, Glen Waverley and Alamein lines will generally run directly to and from Flinders St Station during the period, with some services bypassing the City Loop completely.
Commuters are advised to use the Journey Planner to figure out the best way to get to their destinations. On the bright side, public transit in Victoria remains free until May 31. Plus, half price fare until the end of 2026 doesn’t hurt either.
