Reinvention has become par for course for this Californian MC, Lyrics Born has never been pigeonholed as such. Lyrics Born’s last album 2008’s Everywhere At Once was a strong statement in the musical sense that Born was ready for a new direction.
And while As U Were has a somewhat similar feel, there’s enough new stuff to satisfy the harshest of critics and loyalist of fans. Kicking off this album with an electro vibe onKontrol Phreak & I Wanna Be W/U, followed up with a Planet Rock throwback, with We Live By The Beat. Coulda Woulda Shoulda, brings back memories of Rick James and his hit Mary Jane and is easily the best song. Block Bots & I’m The Best round out the crackers on As U Were. The rest of the album just fails to make the Lyrics Born grade of quality, which is confusing as they’re on a Lyrics Born album. Overall though, it’s a great new album from one of the finest MC’s in the business and is a great addition to his rainbow of work.
