Locals do it better: Homegrown Festival brings its best lineup yet to Ballarat this weekend

Homegrown Festival
Words by Luke Carlino

Youngbloods, legends and a double bubble, Civic Hall Ballarat host some of our finest this month.

Not that we needed a reminder that our local music is some of the best out there, but Homegrown Festival is here, once again, to provide it. On March 23rd, we have a whole day of homegrown talent taking over Civic Hall Ballarat in Ballarat, headlined by hometown heroes, the heartstring-tuggers Slowly Slowly, who have been running hot on their new album Daisy Chain.

Fresh from their Good Things/Fed Square appearances (that’s right, two gigs in one day for the busy lads), the Slowly boys are once again biting off as much as they can possibly chew with a mammoth double-up.

Slowly Slowly and TOOSLOW

What are we talking about?

Well, Homegrown is bringing not one, but two iterations of Melbourne’s favourite emo/punk-poppers as Slowly unveils the debut live performance of their new band TOOSLOW. A side project that was born from a love of American Pie movies and the fact that Ben Stewart writes too many songs, TOOSLOW already have two nostalgic pop-punk EPs under their belts and will be warming things up in the arvo for the headline Slowly performance later on.

Kisschasy are well and truly back

Also on co-headline duties, Melbourne welcomes back the lads who are likely on the Slowly Slowly influence list – Kisschasy. If fans were worried their reunion appearance at Good Things and the subsequent national tour was a once-off just for nostalgic fun, relax, as they are back again. While the Good Things appearance was a front-to-back trip through the band’s debut album ‘United Paper People,’ Homegrown offers a chance to hear the full spectrum of Kisschasy greatness. Do-dos, Whoa-ohs, dinosaurs and spray-on pants, get ready to sing-a-long to some of your favourite songs.

The Getaway Plan

Slowly, Kiscchasy and TOOSLOW will be joined by The Getaway Plan, performing their classic album ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ in full. This is The Getaway Plan we all remember – huge choruses, driving rhythms and the occasional breakdown. Album openers Other Voices/Other Rooms and Streetlight kick start the mosh pit and singalongs. The more heavier, screamo elements of their sound still slay after all these years and the band clearly still love playing every moment.

Press Club

Press Club steamed-rolled into the Melbourne punk scene in 2017 with their fierce determination to mould a stagnate scene. With a hard stance on rejecting the norm, the four-piece have paved a solid DIY pathway for their powerhouse platform.

Emo Never Sleeps, Lashes and Catholic Guilt

Plus, the Emo Never Sleeps DJS will be spinning tunes all day, reminding us all that we likely had a big fringe at some point if we’re interested in this festival. Ballarat rapper Lashes will be a highlight, while Melbourne punks Catholic Guilt will be showcasing their cracking new single Can You See Me?

As part of the Victorian Government’s Live Music Restart Program, Homegrown will now be happening for the regional legends.

Tickets are on sale and still available for both Homegrown Festival dates right now.
