Underlay is set to host A Friendship Fundraiser at the Brunswick Ballroom on Friday, March 15.

A few weeks ago, Melbourne-based indie artist, Underlay (the project of multi-instrumentalist Cody Broughman) and Brisbane-based band Platonic Sex were victims of a home invasion, where thieves made away with upwards of $100,000 worth of musical instruments and equipment.

This Friday, the local music community is looking to turn tragedy into triumph yet again by hosting a huge Friendship Fundraiser at the Brunswick Ballroom.

All proceeds will be put into replacing what was lost and the event will feature special collaborators such as Dogworld, Jarrow, Bakers Eddy, Tamara and the Dreams with more to be announced.

Astonishingly, this is not the first time that the Underlay has had his gear compromised, which makes the recent break-in all the more heartbreaking.

“We are beyond lucky that we weren’t home, and our dog survived the intrusion despite being attacked, but we have now lost all our belongings and music equipment,” he says.

“I lost everything I own in a house fire four years ago, and I have spent that time working hard to try and restore a life, so to see it all disappear in the blink of an eye is beyond devastating.”

Previously organised as the launch party of Underlay’s recent EP Sick Like A Kid, the fundraiser is expected to be a beautiful moment of coming together for the Melbourne music scene.

On the same day as the event, Underlay will also be releasing a remix of his newly-released track Family Lines. With this reworking of the tune, Broughman takes on a darker and raw approach.

“With the remix of Family Lines, I really wanted to capture some of the chaos that we get when I play this song live, and recontextualize it into something new that still translates the feeling I was trying to convey with the original version. Musically, I’ve always been super proud of this song, so I wanted to grab the opportunity to dive even further into that and give it a bit of a darker edge.”

In an Instagram post, Underlay states his enthusiasm for the show and expresses his gratitude towards supporters.  “Thanks to everyone who’s put this together, let’s make this a celebration.”
