What inspired your new single West? Excuse me while I be a downbuzz for a second but a few years ago I was probably at my lowest. I wasn’t mentally strong enough to control the emotions I had concerning my lack of. I was determined to break from that so I decided I needed to be comfortable alone, I needed to feel safe in my own mind, free of doubt and insecurities. I did that by doing things solo, by doing whatever made me happy.
Tell us about the video’s concept? I took my idea of making a video that looked like an old Wild West film to the director Sunny Leunig, but it felt a bit limiting so we came up with some more ideas. Sunny came up with the evil cat and I said I wanted to do dress up and film some green screen footage which turned out to be me floating through space with a giant robotic enemy cat who could only be beaten by dance battle.
What’s the most important message/lesson you’ve learnt? As musicians we have the opportunity to create/influence an atmosphere and share our love of music with a crowd of people we’re meeting for the first time.
Tell us about your songwriting process? I find a few chords I vibe with or a beat, I start seeing movie scenes in my head – sometimes I’m the lead role sometimes I’m just an extra. I think about some real life experiences I’ve had and merge the two worlds to create an idea of an imagined reality. I just have to make sure I write quick enough before the thought vanishes.
What can fans expect from a Lakyn show? Sometimes I don’t even know what I can expect from a Lakyn show. As long as I bring my A-game so the crowd can vibe with that. They’ve come to see me and I’ve come to see them so it’s a team effort.
How does it feel having your song View Looks So Good connecting with so many people? It feels great knowing that people are connecting with the song as it represents a hardship I think we all go through and that’s the struggle of accomplishing what once seemed way out of reach.
