Irish rap trio Kneecap are dropping in for a free pop-up performance at Fed Square, giving Melburnians one more chance to catch their electrifying show.

Kneecap – featuring Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí – will take over the iconic Melbourne venue as part of Fed Square’s continuing summer of live music. Their appearance follows sold-out shows across the country and comes fresh off their late-night set at Golden Plains.

Known for their sharp political commentary delivered through a unique blend of Irish and English lyrics, Kneecap have been making waves internationally since releasing their debut album Fine Art and appearing at Glastonbury in 2024.

Continuing Fed Square’s musical summer

The appearance builds on what’s been a cracking season of live music at the central Melbourne venue, with surprise performances already having been delivered by the likes of Robbie Williams and Caribou, alongside scheduled gigs featuring Glass Beams, Mildlife, Sun Ra Arkestra and Peach PRC.

Fed Square has been positioning itself as a premier destination for free high-quality performances, with the ongoing Open Air program transforming the public space into a vibrant cultural hub.

“We’re buzzing to be able to put on this free show for the people of Naarm. We’re already playing three shows in the city, and they sold out in no time so this will be mental,” Kneecap said.

From screen to stage

The free gig comes as part of a collaboration with Madman Entertainment, which released the film Kneecap about the groundbreaking Belfast rap trio to audiences across Australia and New Zealand.

Paul Wiegard, CEO and Co-Founder of Madman Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm about extending the relationship between the film and the artists: “Madman Entertainment is thrilled to have released Kneecap, the film about the groundbreaking Belfast rap trio, to audiences across Australia and New Zealand. We couldn’t be happier to continue the journey, partnering with Fed Square to help bring Kneecap’s energy from the big screen to the big square.”

Melting pot of performances

Katrina Sedgwick, Director and CEO of Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co), highlighted the venue’s growing reputation as a music destination.

“Fed Square has always been a destination for live music, but this summer’s program has proved that it is an incredible venue for high-quality gigs! It’s central, has a dynamic outdoor stage and capacity for large crowds to come together and enjoy a melting pot of performances. Kneecap’s surprise set will be no exception to the unforgettable gigs we’ve put on this summer, and we look forward to hearing the group’s distinctive Irish tongue takeover the city centre,” she said.

The free Fed Square performance comes as a welcome addition for fans who missed out on tickets to the group’s official tour. Their eight-date Australia and New Zealand tour is completely sold out, demonstrating the growing appetite for their politically charged performances.

Rap enthusiasts who make it to Fed Square can look forward to high-energy delivery and articulate lyrics that merge reality, activism and absurdity – all hallmarks of the trio’s performance style that has garnered them a rapidly growing international fanbase.
