Close out your summer with a month of balmy nights and the best seats in town with Fed Square’s Open Air at the Square program.

Open Air at the Square has got a little something for everyone in store this February.

From an array of live music taking over the stage – including Glass Beams, stunning candlelight concerts from Soli, Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks, and Teeks – to an open-air outdoor cinema serving up a collection of classic flicks, plus a whole lot of Asia TOPA coming through with the party goods and a dash of community events to spice things up, Fed Square is truly your one-stop-shop this summer.

Live Music

BMW Opera For All

  • Saturday, February 1, from 5pm to 7pm

If you’re a fan of the opera, you’ll be a fan of Fed Square’s BMW Opera For All. Orchestra Victoria are teaming up with some of Opera Australia’s most beloved performers for a night of grace and beauty on the Fed Square stage.

Candlelight Concerts

  • Tuesday, February 4 to Thursday, February 6, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm

River backdrop, open-air amphitheatre, all in the heart of the city; tick, tick, tick. Fed Square might just be the ultimate Candlelight Concert venue in Naarm. This February there’ll be local artists that cover a wide range of genres and styles across three nights of performance. Think Soli, Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks and Teeks performing to oceans of candles – beautiful.

Afro-Caribbean Carnival

A slice of the Caribbean is coming to the CBD as Fed Square gears up for this vibrant celebration of culture, costume, food and music that is the Afro-Caribbean Carnival. A free party that will see some international soca and reggae superstars hitting the stage at the Square, this isn’t one to miss.

Fed Square X AsiaTOPA Live featuring Glass Beams

Asia TOPA’s opening concert is set to be a spectacular celebration of Eastern-fusion contemporary music, featuring major headliner Glass Beams – and it’s all taking place at Fed Square. Experience one of Naarm’s most exciting culture festivals making a comeback after a five-year hiatus. You can also expect musical performances from the Tokyo-based group TAMTAM and Japanese-born, Naarm-based DJ and selector Shio, plus heaps more.

Asia TOPA: Nongkrong – Sarapan

Presented by Nongkrong Festival, Sarapan – the Indonesian word for ‘breakfast’ – is an all-day, all-accessible, entirely free event as part of Asia TOPA. Reimagining Fed Square as a space to nongkrong (‘hang out’), this event will be drawing on influences from Bahasa Indonesia.

Asia TOPA: Bread, Circuses and Home

  • Friday, February 28 to Monda,y March 10, from 4pm to 7pm

Asia TOPA continues to roll on, and with it, even more displays of radically community-engaging art. Bread, Circuses and Home is a free public installation and mini-festival – the brainchild of Delhi-based artist duo Jiten Thukral (Jalandhar, Punjab) and Sumir Tagra (New Delhi). Don’t miss out on this enticing piece of work.

Asia TOPA: Shadows in Twin Cities

This interactive workshop, screening and adventure by Asia TOPA is for both little kids and big kids alike. Connecting children from Jeonju in Korea to children in Naarm, Shadows in Twin Cities explores city landscapes through conversation and play.

Outdoor Cinema

Silent Cinema with Live Scores

Watch cinema come to life with these special screenings of silent films, paired with live scores from some of the country’s leading musician-composers. The classic silent slices of cinema that will be showing include Ramayana and other tales, The Lost World and One Week alongside Sherlock Jr.

The Wiz: Midsumma Movies Closing Night

What better way to close out Midsumma Festival’s Midsumma Movie program than with a screening of the cult classic favourite, The Wiz. A 1978 reimagination of The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz stars none other than Diana Ross and Michael Jackson in this Afro-futuristic interpretation of the classic film.

Bruce Lee Bonanza

Bruce Lee is coming to the Square this February with two nights of martial arts and action-packed cinema. To celebrate the beginning of the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 7, Fed Square is karate-kicking off the Bruce Lee Bonanza with Fist of Fury. Way of the Dragon will follow on Saturday, February 8.

Community Events

Midsumma Matters with House of Muchness

As part of Midsumma, get down to Fed Square on the first day of February to catch an unmissable event at The Edge. Midsumma Matters with House of Muchness will open up a space for conversation and artistic experiences around issues of concern to LGBTQIA+ youth.

Lunar New Year

What better place to celebrate the Lunar New Year than right smack band in the heart of the city? Fed Square will be honouring the festivities of the day with a Bruce Lee screening at their outdoor cinema, a group Tai Chi class, a dragon dance and more. And all of it for free.

Huddle

If you’ve not seen or heard of Huddle before, now’s your chance to catch this monumental documentary. Exploring the historical significance behind how Deaf huddling came to be, this is a moving story of teamwork, community and human connection.
