JVG’s Mother’s Day Show returns to Brunswick Ballroom for a fifth year of motherly magic

Brunswick Ballroom
words by Frankie Anderson-Byrne

Melbourne music institution Jon von Goes is bringing his beloved Mother's Day Show back to Brunswick Ballroom for a fifth year running.

For years, von Goes has been hosting a special Mother’s Day edition of the JVG Radio Method on RRR; a back-to-back celebration of mothers singing songs about motherhood in all its forms.

The joys, the chaos, the ecstasy, the mundanity. Kids running around the studio, extended families piling in, the whole beautiful mess of it.

It’s become one of those rare annual traditions that feels incredibly irreplaceable, and this year the energy doesn’t stop at the radio studio door.

Once the broadcast wraps, the whole shebang relocates from one Brunswick institution to another; from RRR straight to Brunswick Ballroom, where nine singing mothers will take the stage to perform the songs they debuted on air, plus plenty more.

Backing them up is the stellar house band The Mother’s Little Helpers, making sure every performance lands with the warmth and polish it deserves.

This year’s lineup is a cracker, featuring Sarah Carroll, Kerri Simpson, Angie Hart, Barb Waters, Celia Church, Tale & Eliza Wolfgramm, Marie Ewing & The McKinnons of Eckline, and Emma D from Wrong Way Up.

It’s a proper afternoon out; the kitchen opens from 5pm, so you can make a full night of it. Whether you’re bringing your mum, celebrating as a mum yourself, or just someone who loves good live music in a great room, this one’s hard to beat. Shout your mum something special this Mother’s Day.
