Purity Ring’s Australian hit list: croissants, coffee and the NGV

Words by staff writer

The Canadian electronic pop duo share five things they can't wait to get back to when they touch down in Australia this June.

It’s been a full decade since Purity Ring last set foot on Australian soil, and Corin and mj have clearly been thinking about the return. Ahead of their east coast headline tour this June — their first local dates in 10 years — the duo shared the five things they’re most looking forward to revisiting down under. Spoiler: the food ranks highly.

First up, coffee. “We dream of coffee and brunch in Australia, especially Slowpoke,” the duo say, name-checking the beloved Brunswick East cafe. If you’ve ever tried to explain Melbourne’s brunch culture to a Canadian, you’ll understand why a decade away might sting.

Then there’s the pastry pilgrimage. Lune Croissanterie, the Fitzroy institution that routinely draws queues around the block, made the list with a glowing endorsement: “Fitzroy or France, one of the best we’ve had, ever.” High praise from a band who’ve toured the world several times over.

It’s not all eating, though. The National Gallery of Victoria also earned a spot, and the duo’s reasoning is genuinely lovely. “Just to walk around but we always seem to find somebody old or new who we never realized how much we love,” they say. There’s something fitting about a band known for building lush, immersive sonic worlds being drawn to gallery spaces between shows.

Number four on the list is a longer-term dream. “Pink Lake — always wanted to see this, probably still won’t on this round so we will have to come back for longer,” they admit. Consider that an open invitation for Australian promoters to book a more expansive routing next time.

And rounding out the five? The show itself. “The Purity Ring show at Northcote Theatre — we cannot wait to come back, see you there!” It’s hard to argue with that energy.

The tour marks a triumphant return for one of electronic pop’s most distinctive acts. Purity Ring’s self-titled fourth album is the most expansive the duo has ever sounded, with their visual identity deeply embedded in the record’s DNA. Inspired by RPGs like Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, the album tells the story of two characters on a journey to build a kinder world amid the ruins of a broken one. It’s the kind of ambitious, self-directed creative swing that only comes from a band fully in control of their vision.

Since releasing their debut Shrines on 4AD — which earned Pitchfork’s Best New Music honours and a Polaris Prize shortlist — the pair have carved out a singular lane. Fineshrine is certified gold in the US, Grandloves was sampled by Playboi Carti on Die Lit, and their latest era of self-released music feels like the destination they’ve been building toward all along.
