I am so unbelievably torn over the new Iron & Wine album. Sometimes it sounds like genius, other times I’m disturbed by the wild-eyed soft rock abandon. Tree By The River really epitomises the problem. This sunny, honey tune is full of swelling harmonies, twinkling notes and gently loving lyrics. It’s twee and terribly easy listening, but then it’s also kind of beautiful, perfectly assembled and undeniably infectious. When I like it I love it, and when I don’t… I don’t know.
