To support local business, Oatly will be giving away free coffees at participating Melbourne and Sydney cafes from September 16- 22.
The experience of having a coffee is a joy like no other. There is truly something about it that can only be matched by perhaps your wedding day or a trip to Italy.
Upon walking into the café, your nose is immediately enveloped in the aroma of ground coffee beans and freshly frothed (oat) milk. You then have a brief chat to your favourite barista, who knows all the current ins and outs of your dating life. Before finally, you are delivered your sumptuous treat, basked in all its frothy glory, a coffee. From the first sip, you can practically hear the Hallelujah chorus bellowing down upon you.

Without an ounce of hyperbole, coffee is truly life’s great saviour. It’s the motivation for a lot of us to get out of bed, and really, the reason why most of us can still function on a daily basis.
Our local cafés and baristas truly are also the unsung heroes of our community. They’re the friend that’s always there for you, lending you a hand of support. However, with the cost-of-living crisis currently at full beam, many of us have been left with slightly tighter purse strings than usual. As a result, cafés and baristas have noticed a slight decline in consumers visiting coffee shops.
This is where the great team at Oatly come in. They know how tough we’re all doing it. They have noticed how empty our cafés are starting to look. They have seen just how lonely our baristas are looking at the minute.
To counter this, Oatly have just launched a campaign designed to offer support to your local cafés and baristas…or oat dealers if you will. This includes an oat milk hotline, 1800-OATFIX, where you can hear oats mooing, leave a message or – for one week from 16th-22nd September – redeem a code for a free coffee at participating local oat dealer cafés.
In speaking of the campaign, Hazelle Klønhammer, brand director of Oatly’s APAC region offered, “Rather than spend our marketing budget entertaining people with our usual Oatly advertising, we’ve chosen to help the community, by shining a spotlight on the cafes and their baristas to help support their business by driving consumers directly to their cafes. And to help consumers, by surprising them with a free coffee.”
The team at Oatly have also done one more and gone on the ground to have a chat with a few of your local oat dealers. They wanted to see how they’re doing and give you a few facts about your local oat dealers.
A few facts about your local oat dealers
Firstly, patience and understanding are the green flags 30% of baristas are on the lookout for with their customers. Brighter Coffee’s very own oat dealer, Junji Tai furthered that “Showing appreciation for the work we put into our craft as baristas with patience and courtesy for the staff and team is always awesome.”
While they understand how busy your lives can be, they also do love a chat. Sonido’s Fernanda Munoz Vargas explained that “I love the relationship you build with customers; you end up getting involved in their lives and sharing your own – it’s a beautiful connection to have.”
As for their customer icks, your local oat dealers have a few of those too. 26% of the baristas we spoke to said that one of their main icks is orders being placed while the customer is on their phone. Xavier Whitton of Tarts Anon also shared that “The biggest ick is being on the phone when you come into the shop and shushing me when I greet you. That specific type of rudeness definitely tests my ability to keep my mouth shut.”
Interestingly enough, 56% of all baristas would also choose to make an oat milk coffee all day long if they could. Thea Dean of Plug Nickel furthered that “If I could make one drink all day long then it’s probably an oat flat white because it’s my order. I always assume everyone drinks oat milk, as it’s the best in coffee.” This change to dairy alternatives is also largely being spearheaded by young people.
So, I implore you, call up your local oat dealer and get your oat fix in. I’ve already got the number saved on my mobile.
Coffees can be claimed by going to the participating cafes and giving them a password that consumers receive by dialling 1800-OATFIX – one coffee per consumer while stocks last.
