Airport run? Here’s how pickup and dropoff works at Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport
words by staff writer

Melbourne has its unspoken rituals, and if you’ve got a car, doing airport runs for mates and family is firmly one of them.

Luckily, Melbourne Airport has designated Pick Up and Drop Off zones that make the whole process pretty straightforward.

Whether you’re dropping someone off for a holiday overseas or picking a friend up for a long-overdue visit, knowing what to expect before you head out the driveway saves you a lap of the terminal and a lot of second-guessing.

How do you pick up or drop off someone at Melbourne Airport?

The good news? It’s nowhere near as complicated as finding your mate in a packed concert arena. A smooth airport run really comes down to three things:

  • Which terminal they’re arriving at or departing from
  • Where to pull up and when
  • What to do if you show up before they’re ready

Find out which terminal they’re flying in or out of

The one-minute standing time limit at Melbourne Airport’s Pick Up and Drop Off zones means you want to know exactly where you’re going before you get there. Ask your passenger which airline they’re flying.

All Qantas domestic flights use Terminal 1, all international flights are at Terminal 2, domestic Virgin Australia is at Terminal 3, and Jetstar, Rex and Link Airways are at Terminal 4.

Get familiar with Drop Off and Pick Up zones for each terminal

Dropping off passengers is simple. For Terminals 1, 2 and 3, take Exit 19B from the Tullamarine Freeway and follow the T123 Drop Off signs, and you’ll land on Departure Drive on Level 2. Heading to Terminal 4? From the Tullamarine Freeway, exit at 19A Naarm Way and follow the signs to Level 2 of the T4 Transport Hub.

Picking up is a different story and needs a bit more coordination. For Terminals 1, 2 and 3, the pick-up zones are on Arrival Drive at the ground level of the T123 forecourt. Just take Exit 19B from the Tullamarine Freeway and follow the T123 Pick Up signs to get to Arrival Drive. For Terminal 4, it’s Level 1 of the T4 Transport Hub via Exit 19A Naarm Way.

Whether you’re picking up or dropping off, timing is everything. Get it right, and you’re in and out before you know it. Get the timing wrong, and you’ll find yourself needing a plan B.

Know what to do if you arrive early

It happens to everyone. You leave home with plenty of buffer, traffic is lighter than expected, and suddenly you’re at the airport with 45 minutes to kill and nowhere to go. Circling the terminal is not the move.

Melbourne Airport’s Free Wait Zone, just off the Tullamarine Freeway, is exactly where you want to be in that situation. Take Exit 18 from the freeway to get to Mercer Drive, park up, put on a podcast, and wait until your mate texts you they’re ready to go. The first 60 minutes are free.

Keep your next Melbourne airport run on the right track

Melbourne Airport is in the middle of the biggest road network change in its history, and the way you pick up and drop off is changing with it. The new Pick Up and Drop Off zones are due to open in late 2026, so if you’re doing an airport run around that time, it’s worth knowing what to expect.

To make sure your next airport run goes without a hitch, follow Melbourne Airport on social media or check their website to stay up to date with everything that’s changing before you next head out.
