The new project Schism 21C is set to perform tracks from their new album Only The Shell Remains at Odeon Richmond.
Schism 21C will mark the return of alternative theatrical Melbourne band Schism after a four-decade hiatus from the stage.
The reformed outfit, featuring founding members Gordon “Gordo” Graham and Simon “Circus” Rashleigh, has reimagined their early 1980s recordings into a new collection of tracks with a darker, more sophisticated edge. This modern iteration of the band will perform material from their new album Only The Shell Remains, transforming their original post-punk-prog sound into newly revitalised digital works.

In their original incarnation, Schism were a significant unsigned force in Melbourne’s alternative music scene, known for packing venues with their highly visual and theatrical headline shows. They shared stages with influential acts including The Birthday Party, Hunters and Collectors, INXS, and Dead Can Dance at iconic venues such as The Crystal Ballroom, Macys, and The Venue at Earls Court.
The band’s self-titled cassette album, released in 1982, gained considerable interest in independent stores and received airplay on community radio stations 3RRR and 3PBS. It was even exported to international markets including Japan and Germany.
Fast forward to the 2020s, Graham (drummer, keyboards, producer) and Rashleigh (lead vocals, synths, co-producer) have reformed as a duo, experimenting with their original recordings. They’ve converted these electronic and post-punk-prog pieces into midi code before reimagining them into new compositions.
Their upcoming performance at Odeon Richmond promises a musically varied experience spanning genres including darkwave, electronica, post-punk, goth prog, and synthwave within a sonically rich landscape. Support for the evening comes from Keith Stone – The Creature from Outer Bass.
Odeon Richmond, the venue for this comeback performance, is a multi-arts exhibition and retail space complete with bar services, making it an appropriate setting for the theatrical nature of Schism 21C’s performance.
