‘I grew up listening to Billy Joel’: Tina Arena announced as support for MCG gig

Tina Arena

Tina Arena has been announced as the special guest for Billy Joel’s performance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday 10 December.

Arena is one of the best-selling artists in Australian history. Famed for her world class vocal skills which see her singing in English, Italian, French and Spanish, she is equally recognised for her passionate support of the arts.

Arena has sold over 10 million records across her multi-decade career, winning several ARIAs and inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2015. To date she’s released 12 studio albums, four live albums, four compilations, 45 singles and 36 music videos, adding two World Music Awards and an ALMA (American Latino Media Arts Award) to her many accolades.

The daughter of Sicilian emigrants, her European success – winning a BRIT Award and being knighted in the French National Order of Merit by former president Nicholas Sarkozy among other credits – further singles her out as one of the finest artists Melbourne and Australia more broadly has ever produced.

“I grew up listening to Billy Joel,” Arena said. “His songbook is a big part of the soundtrack of my life so I really look forward to being a part of this extraordinary, once in a lifetime event. You don’t want to miss this show.”

Decades after since fans first met her at just eight-years-old on Young Talent Time, Arena has previously shared the stage with world-renowned artists such as Lionel Richie, Donna Summer, Marc Anthony, and Andrea Bocelli. In June 2022, Arena wrapped her role as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, where she also performed in the show Songs My Mother Taught Me.

This special, one-off major event is part of ALWAYS LIVE, a Victorian state funded live touring program. Joel sold over 150 million records as the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time, and the third best-selling solo artist.
