Hozier and Angie McMahon combine for an unforgettable SummerSalt 2024

Hozier
Words by Staff Writer

We weren't the only ones in the crowd holding out for a Hozier - Angie McMahon. To finish on Work Song together was one of the more special experiences we've had at a festival this year.

SummerSalt just never fails to deliver, even Hozier was blown away, describing that holy mix of sun, surf and live music as a healing experience.

SummerSalt’s return was marked by as memorable a lineup as the festival has ever boasted – although their all-Aussie 2025 affair looks to be equally impressive – and a unique blend of good vibes, sun-soaked scenery, and live music that created a quintessential Australian festival experience.

With Hozier headlining the two-day event for his first performances in Australia since 2019, fans were treated to a much-anticipated showcase of his soulful soundscapes. This return was a highlight for many, and his performances at Torquay and the Hunter Valley left audiences captivated by his expressive voice and powerful, heartfelt lyrics, especially tracks from his Unreal Unearth album.

The real standout was just how committed he was to the live performance. 21 SONGS! Can you believe it? Lucky he has hit after hit, the entire crowd was utterly enthralled throughout, even if half of them were on camp chairs (true blue).

Angie McMahon added depth to the line-up with her introspective, indie-rock stylings that resonate deeply with Australian audiences. Her voice and songs like Pasta and Slow Mover are known for blending vulnerability and strength, making her set both intimate and resonant for festivalgoers. The audience response was a testament to her powerful stage presence and the connection she fosters through her lyrics.

Joy Oladokun brought a sense of soul and authenticity, grounding the festival’s atmosphere with her meaningful and socially aware songwriting. Known for her warmth and profound themes, Joy’s music bridges folk, pop, and soul, offering a fresh perspective that complements Hozier’s and Angie McMahon’s sounds. Her songs, like Look Up, resonate with messages of hope, resilience, and personal growth that contributed to the day’s inspiring and uplifting atmosphere.

Jack Botts, with his coastal indie-folk style, was a perfect fit for SummerSalt’s laid-back, beachy vibe. His acoustic-driven sound and relaxed energy matched the festival’s atmosphere beautifully. Known for tracks like Gypsy, Botts brought a breezy, soulful energy that allowed attendees to kick back and fully immerse themselves in the moment, making his set one of the festival’s hidden gems.

Mia Wray rounded out the lineup with her bold vocals and raw, dynamic stage presence. With a voice that shifts seamlessly from subtlety to power, Wray’s performance offered an emotionally rich experience. Her song Work for Me, among others, showcased her vocal prowess and ability to hold a crowd’s attention, adding a touch of indie-pop polish to the festival.

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Torquay Common, SummerSalt 2024 was a memorable event for music lovers and families alike, with a lineup that seamlessly blended international talent with local voices. The combination of scenic settings, quality performances, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere underscored SummerSalt’s reputation as an unmissable part of Australia’s festival calendar.
