Zengal Hospitality Group has acquired The Quiet Man Irish Pub in Flemington, rebranding it as Auntie Annie's Hotel.

The hospitality group, founded by James Gallagher and Zenita O’Neill, announced the acquisition on 1 April. The pair, who are behind venues including Jimmy O’Neill’s Irish Bar in St Kilda and Naughty Nancy’s cocktail bar in Prahran, have a long personal connection to the venue, with Gallagher having worked there as a chef and venue manager for over eight years.

The rebrand marks a full-circle moment for the co-founders, who met at the historic Melbourne institution.

Zenita O’Neill, Co-Founder of Zengal Hospitality Group, shared her excitement about the acquisition: “We’ve had a long history with The Quiet Man, both professionally and personally. James and I have spent so many years of our careers connected to this venue. It’s a venue that has a special place in the hearts of many, including ourselves.”

O’Neill added: “When we purchased the venue we got really excited because of its heritage and its connection to the race course. We want to keep that heritage alive. We’re thrilled to introduce Auntie Annie’s as a place that celebrates both the past and the future of Flemington.”

James Gallagher explained the significance of the venue’s transformation: “Since our early days in Melbourne, this venue has always held a special place for both Zenita and myself. It’s where we met and where we began dreaming about our own ventures. This venue represents so much of our journey, and as we breathe new life into it, we aim to bring back the warmth and great customer service that people remember fondly. The food is going to be at the forefront, as it always was, as well as good live music.”

“We want to restore the building and bring the original woodwork back to life. Our refurbishment will focus on maintaining the authentic Irish atmosphere while introducing new elements that will keep the venue fresh and exciting for our customers,” said Gallagher.

He continued: “I want Auntie Annie’s to be a meeting place for all and a home away from home for the Irish living in Melbourne. I’ve lived in this area for the last 15 or so years so I know what the area needs.”

The refurbishment will carefully restore and modernise key areas while retaining the venue’s charm and character. Notable updates will include a refreshed interior, a more comfortable layout, and an expanded menu blending traditional Irish favourites with contemporary Australian dishes.

The name Auntie Annie’s Hotel draws inspiration from the venue’s rich history, particularly its ties to Flemington’s horse racing heritage. According to Zengal Hospitality, Annie was a beloved housekeeper who once tended to the upstairs rooms that served as accommodation for jockeys and race-goers.

The renovation is expected to be completed in the coming months, with the reopening date to be announced. Updates will be shared on the venue’s Instagram account @auntieannieshotel.
