Renowned throughout Japan’s Edo period, Hokusai’s works represented an innovative push in a new direction with a unique approach to design and brushwork.
Encompassing 176 works including iconic masterpiece The great wave off Kanagawa (The great wave), the exhibition pairs art from the NGV’s collection alongside pieces on loan from the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Matsumoto.
Seven of Hokusai’s major series including Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji, A Tour to the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces, and more will all be on display.
