Our top picks from Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime Video.

January has come and gone and February is upon us. Although 2020 delayed production on various film and television projects, resulting in many release schedules looking slimmer than usual, all your favourite streaming platforms have still managed to bring it for the month ahead.

Summer’s hottest month is certain to bring nights where the only option is to flop down in front of the fan or air-con and glue your eyes to a screen, so here’s a bunch of stuff to binge-watch while you’re sweating it out.

Netflix

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

From the director behind Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes (Joe Berlinger) comes a gripping new docuseries diving into the mysteries of L.A.’s notorious Cecil Hotel. Nicknamed ‘Hotel Death’, the Downtown spot has been linked to various crimes over the years, though it took on mythological status after the infamous disappearance of Elisa Lam in 2013. Lam was last seen in the hotel’s elevator before she vanished and when bizarre security footage of her last known moments emerged online, the internet went wild with theories about the case and the hotel.

It hits Netflix on Wednesday February 10.

Malcolm & Marie

Euphoria creator Sam Levinson joins forces with Zendaya once again for his latest film, Malcolm & Marie. The film follows filmmaker Malcolm (John David Washington) and his partner Marie (Zendaya) in the aftermath of a successful film premiere which promises to bring them success, but when they return home the evening morphs as the pair come to confront their relationship, its flaws and the strength of their bond. An ode to the great Hollywood romances, shot entirely in black and white, Malcolm & Marie is a raw and realistic exploration of love, intimacy and relationships.

It hits Netflix on Friday February 5.

Rocketman

If you missed Rocketman in theatres, you’ll soon be able to catch the Elton John biopic on Netflix. Starring Taron Egerton as Elton, the film chronicles his rise to fame in a tale brimming with sex, drugs, drama and, of course, music. Portraying his breakthrough years, Rocketman documents the metamorphosis of shy pianist Reginald Dwight into the flamboyant, international superstar Elton John. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual listener, this film is sure to have you wrapped around its finger.

Stan

Tom of Finland

One of the most influential figures of 20th-century gay culture, homoerotic artist Touko Valio Laaksonen – better known as Tom of Finland – became a hero of gay liberation with his fetish illustrations featuring muscular, well-endowed, leather-clad men. In an age where homosexuality was illegal, Tom of Finland’s provocative drawings were as controversial as they were coveted. This biographical drama follows the titular character as he returns home from serving in WWII and begins selling his art, changing the course of his life forever.

It hits Stan on Saturday February 6.

Clarice

Silence of the Lambs sequel, Clarise is set in 1993 – six months after the events of the cult-classic horror film. Starring Rebecca Breeds as FBI agent Clarice Starling, the series follows her life after Hannibal Lector as she returns to the field to hunt down other predators. Dark, twisted and burning with suspense, this is the kind of series you can knock out in a single sitting.
