The Lemon Tree band are now hosting a backyard horror film

Words by staff writer

Nic McRobbie’s Flowers has wrapped a four-continent festival run and landed on Fools Garden’s official YouTube channel in time for Halloween.

Flowers was shot in a WA backyard for under $1,000. Its new home is Fools Garden’s YouTube channel.

Nic McRobbie wrote, directed and self-funded Flowers, which premiered at FrightFest in London in 2025 before screening on four continents. Its run took in Oscar-qualifying festivals including Cinequest and Indy Shorts in the US and Leeds International Film Festival in the UK, and it made it as far as Fantaspoa in Brazil. Vortex Film Festival gave it Best Micro Short. Back in WA, it played CinefestOZ, Revelation Perth and WA Made, with a stop at Sydney Underground on the east coast.

McRobbie came up making music videos for N’fa Jones, Remi Kolawole, Cool Out Sun and Knowledge Bones. While cutting Flowers, he found the edit fell into step with Lemon Tree, the 1995 pop single by German band Fools Garden. He stumped up for the festival rights and kept the song in. Those rights only stretch to festival screenings.

When the festival run wrapped, McRobbie checked the time in Stuttgart, had a beer and rang Germany. Somebody answered. After some back and forth over email, the band had watched Flowers and liked it.

Peter Freudenthaler and Volker Hinkel started Fools Garden in Pforzheim in 1991. The pair wrote Lemon Tree, which appeared on the band’s 1995 album Dish of the Day and went on to top charts around Europe. German DJ Alle Farben reworked it with the band in 2021.

With Halloween closing in, the two camps agreed Flowers should finish its run on Fools Garden’s official YouTube channel, and it went live there as October wound down. The promo still gives away little: a lone figure on a garden bench at night, under strings of fairy lights.
