Growing Up. I lived in a bunch of towns through regional South Australia, my dad worked for the bank and we moved around a lot. I was always the new kid and never really had too many close friends, as a result I became obsessed with playing guitar once we’d moved back to Adelaide for high school.
My family were far from musical but I had the opportunity to go to a performing arts high school and my musicality was really nurtured there – playing in musicals, jazz bands and singing in choirs. Going through high school without a lot of close friends, I found solace in music. I had self-esteem issues and didn’t really get invited to parties or anything, so playing music became more about survival then a hobby. It gave me something to do and I became quite good at it after a while. It really helped me develop confidence in myself.
Inspirations. My all time favourite musicians are The Waifs – I first discovered them in high school. I was in a play at the time and was meant to be studying avant garde music to include in the performance and I’d gotten that confused with contemporary folk music and somehow came across The Waifs. I loved everything they were about, hearing songs about travelling and songs played on an acoustic guitar that weren’t country – I was hooked.
Your Music. I make feel good soul music. This current EP is actually my seventh, but I haven’t really felt like I’ve nailed the sound that I’ve wanted to until this recording. I feel like all the EPs before now are a part of my musical apprenticeship and not quite the best I could do, where as with this EP I feel like I’ve arrived musically and am really proud of the music I’m pushing out.
