George Orwell’s ‘1984’ captures anxiety and confusion in a Big Brother world

1984pic.jpg

It’s April 1984 and Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching.

Smith’s invasive government is keeping a malevolently watchful eye on each and every one of his exploits. One of the most widely referenced and best known fictions of all time, 1984 was first published in 1949.

Interest in the feature has spiked in recent months as worldwide media draw parallels between the environment of suppression mimicked in Orwell’s classic and Donald Trump’s present day regime.

Robert Icke and Duncan MacMillan’s reimagination is directed by Corey MacMahon and boasts an all Australian cast led by Tom Conroy (Jasper Jones) as Winston and Ursula Mills (John) as Julia, alongside Paul Blackwell, Terence Crawford, Renato Musolino and Guy O’Grady.
