One of the most exciting talents in film is adding a big notch to his belt.
Having directed the final episode of Star Wars: The Mandolorian for Disney+ last year, Taika Waititi is making the step up to both direct and co-write the next Star Wars film.
The announcement was made by Lucasfilm fittingly in line with May the 4th. The role will see the Oscar-winning writer and director, who’s famous for his work with titles such as Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok, team up with 1917 writer, Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
The name of the Star Wars film has yet to be revealed, while no plot or release details have been announced either. The news comes after rumours surrounding Waititi’s further connection with the heralded movie franchise came to light in February.
When asked by Variety what his thoughts on directing a Star Wars film were at the time, he certainly didn’t rule it out.
“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with Star Wars, and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would fucking love to,” he said.
Following the success of Jojo Rabbit, which earned him Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, Waititi will also be venturing back into the Marvel stratosphere when he works on the forthcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
