The MSO's Sidney Myer Free Concerts are back for another year.

Igniting the spark in many Victorian music lovers, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has announced a return to the stage next year with a massive 2022 program with more than 110 performances including six MSO commissions, five world premieres and two Australian premieres.

The Season features an unprecedented eight female conductors/play-directors, 15 Australian composers and six First Nations artists, and one part we’re really looking forward to is of course the MSO’s annual free concert series at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

The hugely popular Sidney Myer Free Concerts have been a staple of Melbourne’s cultural calendar for more than 90 years, sometimes attracting crowds of up to 10,000 and it’s now set to return over three evenings in February next year.

It kicks off on Wednesday, February 9 with A Symphonic Soiree, as internationally renowned conductor James Judd joins the orchestra to perform works by Franck, Hyde, Delius and Ravel, plus the world premiere of a new MSO commission by Bianca Gannon combining orchestral music from with Indonesian instruments.

A hot ticket will be on Saturday, February 12 sees An Evening of John Williams take over the Bowl, with iconic film scores from Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and more to celebrate the great composer’s 90th birthday.

The free series will be rounded out by One Song where the MSO will showcase the music of another great, Aboriginal singer-songwriter Archie Roach, and illustrious musician with Paul Grabowsky as they explore the interconnectedness of humans and nature through song, conducted by Benjamin Northey.

Whether you love your classical music or you just want to stretch out with a picnic on the grass, this will be one summertime tradition to get in on. Performances start at 7.30pm and of course there will be conditions for entry in line with government regulations.
