Sacré bleu!

When you think of bagels, you might not automatically think of the French. Croissants? Definitely. Baguettes? Of course. But bagels? Ummm…

Never afraid to think outside the box, the New Zealand bagel company ABE’S Bagels is launching a French-inspired brioche bagel. To celebrate their latest creation, they’re giving back to the countryfolk that gave them the great idea.

Keep up with the latest music news, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Ten lucky contestants will win a free DNA testing kit. Then, if their results come back as 15 or more per cent French, they’ll be given a boatload of free brioche bagels.

“Launching our French-inspired brioche bagel has been fun! While proud of our heritage, thanks to our new brioche bagels we’ve now got a little bit of French in us too,” said ABE’S Bagels head of growth, Catherine Parlane.

“We hope our brioche bagels provide a delicious culinary experience where we mix a bit of brioche Frenchness into Aussies’ breakfasts and ignite curiosity about their heritage. Personally, I can’t wait to dive in and find out if my own heritage has a little ‘Oui Oui’ in there – who knows!”

According to the census data, under 1% of Australians claim French heritage, however many of us are unaware of our cultural background. Is your last name Bernard, Dubois or Laurent? You might be in for a bready surprise.

But even if you don’t take home the big prize, you’ll still have a chance to find out more about your own ancestry and sample a few of the bagels for yourself. The fluffy, buttery and light brioche is combined with the chewy, glossy bagel – it’s a match made in pastry heaven.

To enter the competition, head to the company’s Instagram page. For more information on the brioche bagel, head here.
