Foxes has just dropped her second single since releasing her 2021 EP and it represents a new start, as she prepares for her first album in five years.
Propelled into the industry at just 19, Foxes was at the forefront of the pop stratosphere with her critically acclaimed debut album Glorious. Then we got the Grammy-winning collaboration ‘Clarity’ with EDM giant Zedd and worldwide tour support slots for Pharrell and Coldplay.
In 2017, she decided it was time to press pause and focus on connecting with herself. In 2020, Foxes returned with ‘Love Not Loving You’ – her comeback single that had a hint of re-emerging empowerment about it.
She then released the singles ‘Friends In The Corner’, ‘Hollywood’, ‘Woman’ and ‘Kathleen’ to form her Friends In The Corner EP.
Today, she returns with her energetic new bop ‘Dance Magic’ – the second single to be taken from her recently announced third studio album, The Kick, due for release on February 11, 2022 via [PIAS] Recordings.
‘Dance Magic’ follows on from ‘Sister Ray’, produced by Ghost Culture (Daniel Avery, Kelly Lee Owens) and released last month alongside the long-awaited announcement of The Kick and the official music video. Inspired by the Velvet Underground song of the same name, the single takes a more anthemic and electronic approach akin to Robyn.
Discussing ‘Dance Magic’, Foxes (Louisa Rose Allen) says; “This single is about being swept up by the chemistry with someone, and not being able to see the sometimes dark reality, dancing around each other in a fantasy you’ve both created.
“The record was written from a place of wanting to escape the walls of my own apartment, I wrote it imagining freedom and dancing and people being able to hold each other again.”
Her first album in over five years, The Kick was written and recorded remotely via zoom during the height of the pandemic, offering a form of escapism for Foxes.
Inspired by the desire for freedom that the world collectively shared over the last 18 months of lockdowns, the near-animalistic desperation to socialise, and a longing to dance again, Louisa naturally pivoted the sonics to feed that escapism and create a record that simultaneously feels close to her euphoric, dancefloor-filling pop roots that brought us hits like ‘Let Go For Tonight’, ‘Youth’ and ‘Body Talk’.
Unafraid of the art of the well-loved melancholic-banger, lyrically The Kick touches on themes of loss and heartbreak, narrating painful places and soundtracking new beginnings to create an album for the post-pandemic world and a summer of never leaving the party early.
“Being so isolated made me really dig deep into my mind,” she says. “My imagination just ran wild and I spent so much time on zoom day and night just writing words and melodies and before I knew it I’d written an album’s worth of material.
“I felt trapped and almost like my insides were dancing but I couldn’t express it, but in writing it allowed me to feel free again.
“This record feels like a new start and the ability to come back to life after such a strange time of us all being alone.”
