Richard Marx is heading back to Australia for a five-city run in April, bringing his After Hours tour to Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Melbourne.

The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer will perform tracks from his latest album alongside the catalogue of hits that’s kept him relevant for close to 40 years.

Richard Marx has managed something only one other artist in history has pulled off — landing number one singles in four separate decades. The only person who shares that distinction is Michael Jackson. His 1989 ballad Right Here Waiting, which hit number one and went platinum in Australia, recently found a whole new audience after Tim Burton used it in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The track has now racked up more than 650 million Spotify streams.

The After Hours album marks a sharp creative turn. Marx recorded the entire thing live with a 24-piece orchestra in complete takes — no overdubs, no studio trickery, just full performances done the way Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin used to cut records. The album blends his own original compositions with classic standards, and features collaborations with Rod Stewart, Kenny G and trumpeter Chris Botti. It’s landed on multiple jazz charts, including a number two spot on Luminate’s Current Traditional Jazz Albums.

Australian audiences will already be familiar with Marx’s face before the tour kicks off. He’s currently in the country filming as a coach on The Voice alongside Mel C, Ronan Keating and Kate Miller-Heidke. His last Australian tour in 2023 sold out, and he’s got 6.6 million monthly Spotify listeners keeping the numbers ticking over.

Discovered at 18 by Lionel Richie, Marx went on to pen 14 chart-topping hits across multiple genres and has collaborated with artists ranging from Hugh Jackman and Luther Vandross to *NSYNC and Ringo Starr. He’s also recently launched a podcast called Stories to Tell, featuring cocktail-fuelled chats with the likes of Paul Stanley from KISS, Bootsy Collins and John Stamos.
