Kino Palace cinemas are set to come alive as Flickerfest returns for the 17th year with their Best of Melbourne Shorts on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 pm. This BAFTA and Oscar-qualifying festival is celebrating its 32nd year in 2023, presenting A-list short films selected from over 3200 entries.

Flickerfest 2023

  • Flickerfest is hitting Melbourne for one night only, on April 12
  • Eight stunning Melbourne shorts will be screened at Kino Palace cinemas in the CBD
  • The festival vibe will be in full swing, with complimentary drinks and filmmakers aplenty

Keep up with the latest Melbourne film and television news here.

After a successful 10-day festival of shorts in Bondi this January, Flickerfest’s bumper crop has been narrowed down to just eight standout local films and it’s set to provide Melbourne audiences with a first look at the hottest short films made and produced in their hometown, many enjoying their local premieres.

Highlights from the program include the moving drama Tarneit, which took out the prestigious Iris prize for Best LGBTQIA+ short in the UK, exploring the unbreakable bonds between two boys united by their deafness and their dream to escape the obstacles that surround them.

The hilarious urban comedy The Best Dumplings In Melbourne follows three friends on a quest to find the perfect snack during a Melbourne night out, whilst the quirky social media comedy Follow For Follow sees an aspiring, narcissistic social media influencer meet a once-powerful, ancient demigod who must take advantage of her skills to get new followers.

Indulge in BLVCK GOLD, a poetic exploration of self-determination set in inner Melbourne, made by and in the South Sudanese community, which was subsequently awarded Best Cinematography at Flickerfest 2023.

In celebration of the festival vibe, patrons will also be treated to a complimentary Gage Roads beer, Rosnay organic wine or Parkers organic drink as part of their ticket and the opportunity to hear from the filmmakers before the screening, offering an insight into their filmmaking process.

Dont miss your chance to experience some incredibly creative and inspiring cinema gems grown in your own Melbourne backyard, from a supercharged team of talented directors.

It all goes down at Palace Kino Cinemas on Wed April 12 at 7pm. Check out the full programme and grab your tickets here.
