Five unmissable Melbourne gigs in April: Funk icons to dreampop newbies

There’s some killer Melbourne gigs on the horizon; dreampop newbies, folk songstresses and international funk icons, there’s something for everyone this April.

Yergurl

She’s the dreampop star that’s been gaining a lot of traction lately, with her new track ‘Puppy Dog’ showing an interesting and grungier side to the performer.

Her genre bending approach has seen her get the attention of festivals like Groovin the Moo, and airplay on stations like Triple J. Catch her at The Workers Club tonight.

Cory Henry

Cory Henry’s heading down under thanks to Bluesfest, which is set to finally happen after years of unfortunate cancellations.

The funk star has featured on the keys with groups like Vulfpeck and Snarky Puppy, and has even been behind some of Kanye’s new music. He’s playing a Melbourne sideshow this month, where audiences can finally experience his virtuosic talents in person.

Hiatus Kaiyote

Everyone’s favourite Aussie funk-meisters Hiatus Kaiyote are touring their hometown later this month, with a couple of dates at the Forum.

This marks some of their first shows after the release of their widely successful latest album Mood Valiant. They’ll be supported by Emma Donovan & The Pushbacks, as well as Kee’ahn.        

Stella Donnelly

Aussie songstress Stella Donnelly is hitting the road ahead of her amazing 2019 release Beware of the Dogs, and before her currently unnamed 2022 album, which was recorded with Anna Laverty, who has been behind artists like Courtney Barnett.

She’s hitting the Corner Hotel in a few weeks and is ready to move audiences with her ornate voice and emotional lyricism.

DZ Deathrays

  • Location: 170 Russell, 170 Russell St, Melbourne
  • Date: Friday April 8
  • Time: 7.30pm
  • Price: $54.29
  • Genre: Rock

Like so many bands out there, DZ Deathrays have released some killer new music over the last few years, and still haven’t had an opportunity to tour it. But there’s not too much longer to wait, with the trio hitting Melbourne later this month.

It’s set to be a massive night of new Aussie rock, with the boys being joined by These New South Whales and Nerve in supporting slots.
