Tori Amos. Her music salvaged me from those dark transient moments growing up, bringing me security and a deep connection within myself. I’ve never personally met Tori, but she’s someone intensely close to me, a mentor who has encouraged me to be open, honest and sensitive with my own writing.
Bjork. There’s nobody on this planet quite like Bjork. Over the decades of her career, Bjork has taken creativity to new heights and I feel that she has been herself the entire time by following her own rules. I have a strong admiration for her quirkiness, eccentric outfits, vocal ability whilst maintaining an impression of innocence.
Yasmin Levy. Yasmin’s highly inflective and melismatic voice coupled with non-western rhythms mainly reflecting the Middle Eastern and Turkish traditions, often induces shivers and tears. Her stage presence is strong, predominantly her voice.
Amy Winehouse. Inspired by strong women, I’ll always remember Amy as daring and restless, someone who simply refused to conform and chose to live wild by following her heart. Everything about Amy was real and impulsive, telling her story through blues and soul. The vulnerability shining through her music is undeniably remarkable.
Alanis Morissette. Alanis’ lyrical creations are intimate and cleverly executed as she expresses her own world views on a number of contemporary issues such as injustice in the world facing humanity, personal relationship issues, alienation, oppression, as well as sharing awareness on positive discoveries. I respect her affirmations on personal strength and conscious thinking.
