On Fridays in August, you can go on a torchlit tour of the Spotswood Pumping Station in an adults-only, after dark walking tour.

Explore the shadowy spaces and darkest nooks and crannies of the Spotswood Pumping Station in this after dark, adults-only walking tour. Tours run for one hour and are lit only by torchlight. Explore the WWII bomb shelters, marvel in the superb iconic architecture and listen as the pumping station is brought to life by scary, tragic and inspiring tales from the past told by their expert guides.

What you need to know

  • Explore areas not commonly open to the public by torchlight at the Spotswood Pumping Station
  • Torchlight Tales is an adults-only, after dark walking tour that is lit entirely by the light of your guide’s torch

Built in the 1890s, The Spotswood Pumping Station was a key component of the Melbourne Sewerage System, operating for almost 70 years from 1898. In the Torchlight Tales tour, learn about the hidden history of the men and women who helped to transform the city of Melbourne into the livable place that it is today. With the grand, symmetrical facade of the building inspired by French Renaissance Design, the industrial marvel was powered entirely by steam for almost a quarter of a century from 1897.

This month, Scienceworks are putting on an after hours program of films this month, with two screenings a night on their famous 16 metre domed ceiling with 7.1 surround sound system and full-dome video projection.
