With her first solo EP releasing to the world today - Friday November 4 - Emily Lubitz marks her solo debut after a decade of touring with her band Tin Pan Orange.
Titled Begin Again, Emily Lubitz’s debut EP rings with retro-tinged folk, while drawing beauty from the mundane by way of beautifully crafted storytelling. Having released today, November 4, she has also just announced a series of performances across the East Coast in celebration of her EP – including a performance at the Queenscliff Music Festival later this month.

A powerful piece of introspective storytelling, Emily Lubitz takes us through the tracks of Begin Again:
Begin Again
“Everyone has to write at least one pandemic song. This is mine. Everything changed for a while and we had to look at ourselves differently. Our lives, our choices, the things we had done and the things we might never get to do. We had a chance to begin again. For me the pandemic was preceded by a hiatus I took to have my third child, so my entire career had to be rebuilt in many ways. Here I am, just one of the billions, beginning again.”
Like I Do
“When a relationship spans many years it contains many lifetimes. This song is about looking back to when things started and how different it is now. How our lives turn and curve and the common denominator is the person we have shared it with. Actually, our partner changes and curves too and so do we so maybe the common denominator is the love. From being young musicians in Melbourne, drinking bourbon and pretending we know everything to being the parents of three children and realising we know very little, it’s a big range. And we are still learning. Like I Do is a love song too.”
Foolish Kids
“This song was written by my husband Harry James Angus. I always loved it so he kindly gave it to me. The lyrics were a little ambiguous for a while until Paul Kelly suggested Harry make it about giving a child up for adoption. Most people don’t hear that story. And I’m reticent to say what it’s about because the imagery is so strong, yet obscure enough that people usually find their own meaning, which is better. I love how Freyja plays like an old drum machine and how my voice fades away at the end like a distant memory.”
What’s She Got
“This song talks about the perils of comparison. Whether it’s the pretty girl from school you bump into, who seems prettier and happier than ever, or lugging a huge suitcase and guitar across Europe on a shoestring tour while dreaming of how Beyonce travels. It’s never a good idea.”
Sinking Ship
“This song is about the grit of a long term relationship. There are times we just need to pretend it’s better than it is. Remember how it used to be. Sometimes we share pain that seems bottomless and we can only acknowledge it in a glance, while we try to keep it together, get the kids to bed, share a beer and put a record on.”
