It’s Melbourne Music Week and that means this Thursday just about every bloody venue in Melbourne turns it up for the Live Music Safari. Here’s a few of the electronic highlights. New Guernica sees theremin/synth wizard Miles Brown teaming up with hardcore punk vocalist Karina Utomo of High Tension in what’s gotta be one of the most interesting collaborations of the festival. Although they each tend to inhabit vastly different genres of music these days, they find common ground on the darker, brooding gothic spectrum of noise and I think the results will be amazing. Backing them up is Jaala vs Man and a/n – a new project from Nick of friendships. The other half of friendships, Mischa, will also be popping in to provide visuals. And finally, to really add that extra something, Leh YSL will be performing Shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage. Entry is free.
Over at Lounge, local label A Colourful Storm has put together a showcase. Playing live will be Sydney industrial techno duo Phile, Tackle and Nerve – a pretty gnarly group of synth and beat manglers who’ll no doubt be taking you on one hell of an eclectic journey. DJ support comes from Hannah Lockwood (one half of Phile), Jezadin, Pickleman (Rings Around Saturn’s jungle DJ alias) and label head Moopie. Milly Davison will also be providing some sweet visuals to keep your peepers happy. And of course it’s free.
Over at Boney, Habits have pulled together a heap of mates for a massive night of sad goth party jams over two levels. Get debaucherous with Habits, Various Asses, Gussy, Kandere, Hexdebt, Trixie Darko, DJ Kiti and Dolly. Free Entry.
If you can’t do a Thursday party, do not fear, Ferdydurke and Section 8 will once again be teaming up to throw their huge ZOO Laneway Party to close out Melbourne Music Week on Saturday. It’s a nine-hour romp intersecting live music, performance and visual art featuring plenty of local and international guests. On board is the big man Briggs, Alexander Nut of Eglo Records performing with the UK’s Fatima, Weird Together, AFTA-1, 30/70, Kaiit, Foreign Brothers The CoreTet, Afrik Futurism and Positively Positive Party. Visuals will be projected on the five-storey wall courtesy of local animator WWZARD6. Presales have sold out, but there’ll be tickets available on the door, discounted ones if you get there nice and early.
