Hip Hop: The Internet are ruling the world

The day I discovered The Internet, my life changed forever. The wildly talented LA-based collective is made up of five young alternative hip hop artists who make mellow music together. Known for their tracks ‘Dontcha’, ‘Special Affair’ and ‘Girl’, The Internet have three albums under their belt including the Grammy-nominated Ego Death. With their magical music abilities, they’ve created an inimitable soulful sound that has captured the hearts of fans all across the world.

Syd has released a full-length album Fin and recently dropped her three-track solo EP Always Never Home. Bandmate Matt Martians created the explosive experimental funk album The Drum Chord Theory, a messy masterpiece of sounds and instrumentals with distinct hip-hop beats.  Guitarist and baby of the band Steve Lacy shows his sensitive side in his impressive debut project Steve Lacy’s Demo EP, with poetic lyrics and dreamy guitar riffs that are reminiscent of bittersweet high-school years.

If you haven’t already heard the good news, The Internet will be returning to Australia to play Laneway sideshows early next year, and they’ll transform The Forum on Wednesday January 31. Each member will take centre stage and perform a set of solo material while the rest of the band backs them up. They will showcase songs spanning their entire career together, along with solo jams and side projects from Odd Future to Jet Age of Tomorrow.

Better yet, Melbourne’s very own soul songstress Kaiit will be the opening act. The fierce young performer stormed onto the neo-soul jazz scene earlier this year with her highly successful track ‘Natural Woman’. Accompanied by an iconic music video, the single shot Kaiit into the spotlight. The R&B queen recently dropped her follow-up single ‘2000 N Somethin’, a heartfelt slow-jam which showcases her lovely voice and lyrical ability. With her honey-coated vocals, eclectic style and bubbly personality Kaiit is set to become one of the biggest names in the neo-soul scene with her music speaking to fans across the globe.

If you are looking for some new hip hop music with a hint of roots and a touch of soul, look no further than Adrian Eagle. With one of the most beautiful voices you’ve ever heard and an effortless flow, the incredibly creative artist has released his latest single ‘17 Again’. A remake of Dom Kennedy’s17’ with original lyrics by Eagle, this song will send shivers down your spine, with its sentimental prose and powerful emotional energy. You can see that the gifted vocalist uses music for freedom and self-healing, with his songs fuelled by acceptance and positivity. Adrian Eagle has been busy working on some new music with his debut EP set to be released sometime next year.
