Melbourne comedy
Words by Ben Lamb

It’s hard to believe July is already here, but as we hit the middle of the year, Melbourne comedy and stage shows are coming hard and fast. Today we’re looking around the grounds at everything from Dolly Parton musicals to shows about puppets.

9 to 5

After successful runs in Brisbane and Sydney, the musical based on the music of Dolly Parton is finally heading to Melbourne. You’ll be able to singalong to all your favourite Dolly Parton hits like ‘Backwoods Barbie’, ‘Here for You’, and of course ‘9 to 5’. The musical has a star-studded cast, you’ll be able to catch Marina Prior, Casey Donovan, Erin Clare, Eddie Perfect, and Caroline O’Connor in top roles. Grab your tickets here.

Felicity Ward

After a bunch of years in the UK, Felicity Ward is heading back home and straight onto the stage to share some jokes. After having a baby during lockdown, she’s got some great stories to share when she hits the Athenaeum Theatre stage on Saturday July 9. Grab your tickets here.

This is an awesome independent theatre show that needs to be checked out. It mixes some of our favourite puppets with stories of dating and life as you get older. There’s some great songs spread throughout as well, mashups of hit songs mixed with old school jams. It’s happening at The Butterfly Club from Monday July 11, check out more info here.

Michelle Brasier

If there’s one comedy show you catch this July, make sure its Michelle Brasier. Aside from the hilarity involved with her lyrical content, her musical comedy features tracks that are perfectly written, and are great songs on their own. She’ll be hitting the Comedy Republic as part of the Replay Festival, celebrating some of the coolest shows from the Melbourne Comedy Festival, grab your tickets here.

A Day at a Time in Rhyme

Heading to La Mama theatre this July is A Day at a Time in Rhyme, a hybrid theatre piece that’s set to mix elements of spoken word, music and poetry. The show is performed by Jane Clifton, an actress who has appeared in some of Australia’s coolest shows. Check out some more info and book in your tickets here.

Carl Barron

The Aussie comedy powerhouse is back, and playing a huge arena show this July. He’ll be playing a couple of shows at Margaret Court Arena, bringing the Skating For Flies tour. Check out some more info and book in your tickets here.

World of Musicals

If you can’t get enough Broadway and musical theatre, World of Musicals is the show for you. It celebrates all things musicals, it features music from shows from Phantom of the Opera to Sister Act, and pretty much everything in between. It’s happening at the Palais theatre, grab your tickets for World of Musicals here.

Daniel Connell

Laid back comedian Daniel Connell is quickly becoming the next big thing in comedy in Australia. His MICF show Gutless Wonder saw a bunch of attention and high praise from fans and critics alike. He’s returning the show to Melbourne stages this July as part of the Replay festival.
