Dragon are bringing five decades of Antipodean rock anthems to St Kilda

Words by staff writer

Few bands can claim over 50 years of rocking stages, but Dragon have been doing exactly that since 1973.

The trans-Tasman rock legends are heading to Espy Gershwin on 23 January for a night packed with the anthems that have soundtracked countless Australian summers. Dragon first formed in Auckland before making the move across the ditch to Sydney, where they broke through with songs that became permanent fixtures on radio airwaves. Tracks like April Sun in Cuba, Are You Old Enough? and Rain helped establish the group as one of Australasia’s most beloved rock acts.

Since reforming in 2006, Dragon have shown no signs of slowing down. The band has clocked up an impressive 893 shows and delivered more than 12,800 songs to audiences across the region. Their journey from progressive rock origins to mainstream success has been marked by reinvention and resilience, keeping them relevant across multiple generations of rock fans.

The group’s contributions to Australian and New Zealand music have been formally recognised with inductions into both the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2011. It’s a rare achievement that speaks to their impact on both sides of the Tasman.

Audiences attending the St Kilda show can expect a setlist drawing from Dragon’s extensive catalogue, spanning their early progressive work through to the radio staples that made them household names. The band continues to perform with the same energy that first put them on the map over five decades ago, proving that longevity in rock music is absolutely possible when the songs are this good.
