Dog Trumpet release nostalgic new single ‘Nina Simone’

Dog Trumpet

Out today, 'Nina Simone' reminisces on romance and a youth spent in London during the 80s.

One of Australia’s most iconic esoteric groups, Dog Trumpet, have just released their latest single ‘Nina Simone’. A nostalgic anthem about romance and London in the 1980s, it details the blossoming romance between Pete O’Doherty and the person who would become his life partner:

“Now our days are dated by old fashioned words / Try to remember you as you were / Sun so low in the middle of the day / Down in the Underground”.

Reflective, nostalgic and wistful, ‘Nina Simone’ is the latest single from their forthcoming album Shadowland, which is set to be released on November 4.

“In 1987 I was on tour in London visiting a friend from Sydney who was living there at the time,” says Peter O’Doherty.

“We spent a few days together looking at the sites, going to galleries, combing second hand shops and markets. One Sunday she bought shoes and I bought her a book and Nina Simone’s first record Little Girl Blue which we took back to her bedsit.

Little did we know we’d still be together today.”

Founding members of the iconic Australian band Mental as Anything, brothers Peter O’Doherty and Reg Mombassa (aka Chris O’Doherty) are Dog Trumpet – an eccentric and offbeat group known for their warm melodic drives and poetic, yet sometimes absurd, lyricism.

Both with ARIA Awards and an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, Reg Mombassa and Peter O’Doherty are established Australian artists in their own right. Known for his idiosyncratic and iconic designs for Mambo Graphics as well as his fine art, Reg Mombassa is a staple of Australian visual culture. Peter is also an established visual artist who is represented by King Street Gallery in Sydney.
