Sun City White is an album you’d imagine listening to while cruising down a desolate American desert highway with the windows down in your black Cadillac. The LP weaves through subgenres, alternating between hard, dirty rock tracks and slower, melodic blues and roots ballads, all with a sprinkle of Texas flavour.
Fukushima Blues kicks off with a jumble of samples before foraying into rock and Americana blues territories, complete with a saucy bassline. The Ballad Of Jackie Flavours delivers a classic country rock melody before Dirt River Radio slow things down with title track Sun City White, a heartstring-tugging ballad with storytelling lyrics. Each track brings something different to the table, with Black Eyed Mondays bearing a striking resemblance to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and The Cocksucking Blues geared with a foot tapping instrumental intro, gutsy hooks, electric guitar solos and masculine grunting.
The albumis a mixed bag of emotions, it kicks you in the guts and rips out your heart, but it’ll keep you smiling and bopping your head all the while. Sun White City is an undeniably rocking album full of heart, grit and Wild West swagger.
