Returning to the big screen this April is David Lynch’s debut cinematic nightmare Eraserhead. Proudly presented by The Astor Theatre and fully restored this is one of the biggest cinematic events of 2011.
When you hear the name David Lynch you instantly think Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, or Mulholland Drive. However, back in 1976, Eraserhead was the film that started it all. This month thanks to The Astor Theatre Melbourne film fans have a chance to experience the film exactly as David Lynch intended; in the dark, on the big screen and with a fully restored, brand new 35mm print.
Filmed in black and white, Eraserhead tells the surreal, terrifingly sublime and tragically funny tale about a man named Henry living in an industrial wasteland. David Lynch takes us on a strange dreamlike visual world to explore one man’s fear of fatherhood and the absurdities of familial life.
Eraserhead is a chilling and perplexing cinematic representation of pure nightmare. Its haunting images and soundscapes of unknowable dread accompanied by its offbeat black humour and awkward delivery capture the very essence and style that would come to be known as David Lynch’s trademark.
This is an experience not to be missed. Eraserhead, David Lynch’s masterpiece will return to the big screen for a strictly limited number of four sessions only. Eraserhead will be showing at The Astor Theatre, corner Chapel Street and Dandenong Road, St Kilda on Sunday April 17 and Monday April 18 at 7pm and 9pm.
