David Lynch : Crazy Clown Time

Music has played a prominent part throughout Lynch’s filmic career, whether it be Frank Booth’s penchant for Roy Orbison, or that downright bizarre breakdown in Inland Empire to Beck’s Black Tambourine – not to mention the long-standing creative partnership with Angelo Badalamenti.

The first taste of Crazy Clown Time came in the form of straight-up banger Good Day Today. Those throbbing electro beats turn out to be an act of misdirection, with the remainder of the album presenting a more sedate run of smoky old-style blues. Lynch’s voice is rich with character, but stands worlds apart from the gravelly baritone from the likes of Tom Waits. Football Game sounds like the result of Peter Lorre crooning the Nick Cave back catalogue, while Strange And Unproductive Thinking features some vocoder-work that would make Laurie Anderson blush.

Crazy Clown Time marks a solid, but far from revelatory, musical effort from the iconic director, resting nicely within the canon of films, photography and instructional quinoa-preparation videos.

Key Track: Football Game
