David Bowie’s Goblin King is about to take over Melbourne

Words by staff writer

Jim Henson's Labyrinth: In Concert brings the cult 1986 fantasy film to Melbourne with a live band performing the full soundtrack

Forty years after audiences first watched a teenage girl navigate a maze full of puppets and David Bowie in extremely tight pants, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: In Concert is heading to Melbourne.

The touring production screens the complete 1986 fantasy film on a high-definition screen while a live band performs the full soundtrack in sync with Bowie’s original vocals. That means every note of the score composed by Bowie and Trevor Jones rings out through the room, from the sweeping orchestral passages to the songs that have soundtracked countless childhood rewatches.

The show lands at Hamer Hall across two dates in September, wrapping up a global run that has already passed through close to 100 cities worldwide. Costumes are encouraged, singing along is expected, and cheering for your favourite creatures from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is more or less mandatory.

Labyrinth was released on 27 June 1986, directed by Jim Henson and starring Jennifer Connelly alongside Bowie as the iconic Goblin King Jareth. The film flopped at the box office but found its audience on home video, growing into one of the most enduring cult classics of the era.

Presented by Spiritworks in association with Symphonic Cinema, the Melbourne dates mark the Australian leg of the 40th anniversary celebration. Three sessions across the two dates mean there’s room for the diehards and the merely curious alike.
