Dark Mofo to be resurrected in June: ‘We’re beginning a new era’

Dark MOFO

One of Australia's most boundary-pushing arts and music festivals, Dark Mofo returns to Hobart between June 8 - 22.

“We’re beginning a new era of Dark Mofo, exploring the ideas of rebirth, reincarnation, and new life. We’re privileged to have some internationally renowned artists confirmed for this year, alongside exciting locals. It feels like the cultural world is re-emerging post-covid, and so will the festival.” Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael.

Dark Mofo has quickly a forged an international reputation, along with its summer counterpart Mona Foma, as sitting at the furthest edge of Australia’s artistic practice.

The edgy arts and music program attracts some of the world’s greatest and most unique artists and performers to Hobart each year, expanding beyond the influential reach of its origins in David Walsh’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

Dark Mofo has announced a preview of its 2022 resurrection program, which will feature two slightly separate programs split across each week. Week one (8–12 June) will focus on art openings and performance, while Week two (15–22 June) will deliver Dark Mofo’s signature events, art, and music, with some of the festival’s biggest drawcards taking part.

For the first week, Dark Mofo has teased exhibits from video and new media artist Bill Viola, and photographer, sculpturist, and multi-channel video artist Doug Aitken. Plus, a ‘Mona Up Late’ opening of three new major exhibitions from Jeremy Shaw, Fiona Hall, AJ King, and Robert Andrew.

Then of course, one of the festival’s most famous events, its debaucherous costume party that in 2022 will be known as The Blue Rose Ball.

In week two, there’ll be some highly-familiar musical names making the pilgrimage to the southern tip of the globe. Nils Frahm playing a number of world premiere shows titled ‘Music For Hobart’, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, Deafheaven, Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Lingua Ignota among others.

Some of Hobart’s favourite annual winter festivities shall return in stride; the City of Hobart Winter Feast on the waterfront, the Night Mass: Transcendence taking over the In The Hanging Garden precinct, the Reclamation Walk, and the Nude Solstice Swim.

The full Dark Mofo program will be announced in April, head to their website here.
