BEST ALBUM:
-
Balance And Composure – Separation – The young Pennsylvanians delivered on all expectations both with new album and Australian tour. Bravo.
-
The Smith Street Band – No One Gets Lost Anymore – Happily one of the best Aussie albums in recent memory. Also one of the best live bands doing the rounds. Go see ‘em.
-
Hey Rosetta! – Seeds – Flowery Canadians like epic instrumental climaxes. Me too.
-
La Dispute – Wildfire – A fair departure from the last album, but every bit as passionate and engaging.
-
Swingin’ Utters – Here, Under Protest – Absolutely underrated. Who’dathought?
-
City & Colour – Little Hell – Dreamy and angsty in all the right places.
-
Cerebral Ballzy – self-titled – Brought that defiant, snotty flavour to 2011.
-
Mariachi El Bronx – II – Rest assured anything The Bronx lay their hand to will land in my top 10.
-
New Found Glory – Radiosurgery – Painfully catchy, quintessentially pop punk.
-
Phantoms – As Above So Below – Sick.
Merry Christmas to all the awesome people who wander over to this corner of Beat every week and good tidings to those that have been in touch with kind words. You’re all alright in my book. PEACE!
MOOAARRRR SIDEWAVES! Here we go!
Dashboard Confessional will do a sidewave but be warned it’ll just be Chris Carrabba solo. No-one really cares either way, as long as he plays Screaming Infidelities, AMIRITE? He’ll bring Jack’s Mannequin and Relient K to the party at a very intimate venue – Melbourne’s Prince Of Wales – on Wednesday February 29.
Bush (yes…Bush) will play with Staind and young lads Cherri Bomb on Thursday March 1 in Melbourne.
The sidewave to rule all other sidewaves has been announced for Monday February 27 in Melbourne. Bad Religion, Strung Out, Street Dogs and The Menzingers will combine forces for one huge show at The Palace. So. Freakin. THERE.
In case you were waiting with baited breath, you should know that the Marilyn Manson/Coal Chamber/Wednesday 13/Motionless In White sideshow is not coming to Melbs. Melbourne dates are also looking unlikely for Lamb Of God/In Flames/The Black Dahlia Murder and A Day To Remember/The Used/ You Me At Six.
Parkway Drive have revealed that Hand Of Mercy and Hopeless will support them on their Victorian regional dates in Warrnambool and Geelong. Tickets are on sale now for this Sick Summer tour.
It’s also been revealed that La Dispute will play with Harmony and Hoodlum Shouts at their Melbourne overage show at The Corner Hotel, and with Infinite Void and White Walls for their afternoon underage show at The Corner Hotel.
Another old mate punk rock revival tour has been announced and this time UK punkers The Exploited are doing East Coast dates in April. They play at The Corner Hotel on April 28. Tickets are available on Thursday.
Speaking of old mates and revivals, Sublime (with Rome as opposed to much loved Bradley Nowell) have announced an Australian tour and caused a bit of a ruckus in the process. The band usually featured original members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh though the latter has just left the band with a replacement yet to be announced. So see some bits of Sublime play the hits. They roll into Melbourne on April 9 to play at The Palace.
If you reckon you’ve got the goods to replace Andrew Haug as the presenter of triple j’s metal program, The Racket, then you best head over to triplej.net.au/racket to enter the race. Start recording yourself heaps and planning your playlists then submit your entry on Sunday January 8.
The East Brunswick Club has announced that it’ll close its door at the end of summer. We’re told the owners have decided to retire from the hospitality industry and have sold the building. The new owners will not continue it as a live venue. Any local acts keen to play a last show should get in touch ASAP. Shows will continue to run through until March.
Bodyjar have announced another No Touch Red show after The Corner Hotel show sold out rather hastily. The Espy will now host Bodyjar, One Dollar Short, Antiskeptic, Game Over, For Amusement Only, Strathmore, Seconds and The Union Pacific on Friday March 30. Tickets on sale now.
