Chair of Council’s Arts and Culture portfolio, Councillor Rohan Leppert said, “Artists and the work they do have a special role in a creative city. The City of Melbourne aims to be a key player in the development of a flourishing arts scene in the city by investing in artists and arts organisations. Investment in the arts is central to Melbourne’s creative community. The work produced through the arts grants program is integral to the continual development of Melbourne’s arts scene.”

Over the past 17 years, the Arts Grants Program helps to ensure that artists and organisations can offer audiences  continued access to free and low cost exhibitions, events and performances. The grants have also been given to musicians to record albums.

Cr. Leppert added, “We recognise that experimentation, inclusivity and diversity are vital to a strong and exciting arts culture, and that’s why we work with artists of all backgrounds across the full spectrum of practices and art forms.”

There are two funding categories in the program. The Arts Projects category is open to artists, arts organisations and community agencies, working in any art form or practice. The Indigenous Arts category is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists, arts organisations and community agencies for arts projects and activities in any art form or practice.

Successful applicants are required to deliver their project in the City of Melbourne municipality within the 2015 calendar year. Funding of up to $20,000 per applicant is available.

All applications are assessed by an external panel and endorsed by Council. For more information and to apply visit melbourne.vic.gov.au/grantsandsponsorship/artsgrants or call 9658 9658.
