Christine Anu brings Waku and a lifetime of hits to Brunswick Ballroom

Christine Anu Brunswick Ballroom
words by staff writer

Christine Anu is heading to Brunswick Ballroom for one unmissable night of music, culture, and storytelling.

Brunswick Ballroom is set to host one of Australia’s most beloved performers. Christine Anu has spent 27 years building a career that refuses to be boxed in.

Platinum records, Hollywood film sets, sell-out theatre runs, national radio; she has done it all and she is still going strong. With 17 ARIA nominations and an APRA AMCOS award for My Island Home, her voice is woven into the fabric of Australian music history. Her platinum debut album Stylin’ Up introduced her to the nation, and the impact stuck.

Beyond the music, Christine Anu is a genuine advocate. Proud of her Torres Strait Islander heritage, she has long used her platform to speak up for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and those from marginalised communities. She hosts her own national ABC Radio show every Friday and Saturday, reaching audiences right across the country, and has been a fixture on the station since 2016.

Worth getting excited about right now is the new music. Her forthcoming album Waku, produced with long-time collaborator David Bridie, is a deeply personal work rooted in her cultural heritage. It is the kind of record that takes decades of living to make.

Anu has also spoken about motherhood as one of her proudest achievements, mentoring her daughter Zipporah into performing in her own right. The two have shared the stage together, including at the 2019 Women’s NRL Grand Final, which tells you something about the calibre of moments this woman gravitates toward.

New album, career-spanning classics, and a performer who knows exactly what a live show should feel like.

Kitchen opens at 6:30pm, so get there early and make a proper night of it.
