Melbourne sound artist James Hullick turns divorce and bad parenting into six nights of chaotic theatre

Words by staff writer

Your dad's midlife crisis just got a soundtrack.

Melbourne sound artist James Hullick returns to JOLTED Arts Space with Le Scatterman, a solo show that sits somewhere between a concert, a comedy set and a slow-motion domestic unravelling. The work follows a recently divorced dad as he plumbs new depths in parenting, human connection and general inadequacy — all set to prepared piano, guitar, synthesisers and voice.

Part commedia dell’arte, part confessional performance art, Le Scatterman blends live music with stand-up comedy and unruly bursts of theatrical chaos. Hullick plays, sings, staggers, monologues and cracks open beer cans while projections of his real family flicker behind him.

Le Scatterman

  • 8pm, 9, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18 April
  • JOLTED Arts Space, 342 High St, Northcote
  • Presented by PBS 106.7FM, JOLT & Hullick Studios

The show first premiered in Perth in 2016 before landing at JOLTED Arts Space in 2023, and was adapted into a four-part radio series on PBS 106.7FM during Melbourne’s lockdowns. This latest run marks its most extensive season yet, with six performances across April.

Hullick is the CEO and artistic director of JOLT Arts, a charitable organisation supporting sonic and visual arts creation. His work spans inventive machines, electronics, found objects and large-scale sonic ensembles, and he has built a reputation as one of Australia’s most unconventional sound artists.

Le Scatterman is supported by the Robert Salzer Foundation, the Australia Council for the Arts, Creative Victoria, the City of Melbourne and Flash Forward.
