The most notable Terrible Records release was Twin Shadow’s excellent Forget. The CANT album has much in common with George Lewis Jnr’s album and it comes as little surprise that Lewis is the main collaborator on Dreams Come True. The CANT album suffers a little in comparison with Forget (it lacks that album’s soul and sprightliness), but Taylor concocts a brave mix of sounds. He chucks in some Jamie Lidell and Prince stylings in with the Twin Shadow crooning, while the sadder, darker feel of Grizzly Bear seeps in near the middle of the album. It’s an idea that works on paper, but the weightier and more discordant elements often work against the sunnier style of production. When things are kept nice and simple – as with the first three of tracks on the album – it gels nicely.
The end result is at times frustrating, but still oddly compelling. As with the slow build of Rossen’s side-project Department of Eagles, CANT has some great ideas but perhaps needs more time to develop.
