Boom! Bap! Pow! are a dirty doo-wop five piece fronted by a Duffy-sounding stunner called Novac Bull. Novac has a white soul voice, but what she lacks in brass she picks up in the breathy higher register – her voice is gorgeous. The four boys in the band provide the pumping horns, the r’n’b guitars and the barking backing vocals, as well as a shameless saxophone solo (hello Grease Lightning). It’s a deceptively simple tune – you could write the whole thing off as light-hearted retro posturing, but I dunno… there’s something really charming about it.
