Bloodbath lead Dethfest 2027 into its new Thornbury home

Words by staff writer

Dethfest is leaving The Corner for Thornbury, and it’s bringing a Swedish death metal supergroup along for the move.

Bloodbath will headline Melbourne Dethfest 2027 at The Croxton on 7 March, the festival’s first year at the High Street bandroom after two editions in Richmond. The newly announced full lineup fills out the rest of the bill, with New Zealand’s Stalker, Brazil’s Nervochaos and Victorian outfit Fuck I’m Dead joining Perth’s Ashen, In Malice’s Wake, Writhing and Trepacide. Two stages will run for more than eight hours.

Members of Katatonia and Opeth started Bloodbath in Stockholm in 1998 to play the early-90s death metal their city was known for, the chainsaw guitar tone local bands squeezed out of the Boss HM-2 pedal. Mikael Åkerfeldt and Dan Swanö have both taken turns in the lineup over the years, and Paradise Lost’s Nick Holmes has fronted the band since 2014. Their sixth album, Survival of the Sickest, came out in 2022.

Dethfest started in 2022 and, according to its promoter, has sold out every year since. Rotting Christ headlined at Stay Gold in Brunswick in 2024, with Jungle Rot making their first Australian appearance on the same bill. A year later the festival moved to The Corner and split across two stages with Left To Die on top, and Allegaeon headlined there in March 2026. King Parrot, Disentomb, Abramelin and Exhumed have all played along the way.

Nervochaos have been playing death metal out of São Paulo since 1996. Stalker hail from Wellington and play speed metal at a pace that would get them pulled over on the Hume. Bloodbath and Nervochaos are pulling double duty in February, also headlining Perth Dethfest at the Rosemount Hotel in North Perth on 27 February.

Tickets are on sale now via The Croxton’s Oztix page.
