Westside Cowboy add a Croxton headline show to their Golden Plains trip

Words by staff writer

Manchester four-piece Westside Cowboy play their first Australian headline shows in March, starting at the Croxton on the day Golden Plains wraps up.

Westside Cowboy formed around one rule: go easy on the chords. The Manchester four-piece land in Australia in March.

Frontier Touring and Penny Drop have booked Westside Cowboy three headline shows on the east coast, on top of the band’s spot at Golden Plains in Meredith. Melbourne goes first, with a show at the Croxton Bandroom on High Street in Thornbury on 8 March, the Labour Day public holiday that closes out the festival weekend. Sydney’s Metro Theatre follows on 10 March, and Brisbane gets them at the Princess Theatre a night later. Every show is 18+.

Jimmy Bradbury and Reuben Haycocks share vocals and guitar, Aoife Anson O’Connell sings and plays bass, and Paddy Murphy is on drums. They got together in 2023, a mix of players who’d crossed paths in earlier bands and students from the Royal Northern College of Music. Their debut album, It Goes On, came out in August: 11 songs in 35 minutes, produced by Loren Humphrey. His credits include Cameron Winter, Wunderhorse and Geese, who top the same Golden Plains bill and have already taken Westside Cowboy around Europe as support.

Haycocks has explained where the chord rule came from. Arguments inside the band were rare, he says, and when one did come up, they settled it by going back to their original brief, which held that anyone pushing for extra chords was in the wrong. Two weeks in, they could already tell the arrangement was working.

Since then, the band have won Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition and played both Later… with Jools Holland and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Black Country, New Road took them on tour in Europe too, and a North American run supporting Fontaines DC is on the way. Back in Manchester, they helped start No Band Is An Island, a collective that runs fundraising nights pairing local acts with speakers from charities and direct-action groups.

Frontier Members get first go at tickets, with a presale opening at 9am local time on 22 October. It runs for 99 hours or until the allocation sells out, which means it shuts at noon on 26 October, an hour before general sale opens at 1pm.
